Match Report | 25th January 2008 » Slough Jets 3-1 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 7.45pm, Tuesday 15th January 2008
EP Cup Semi-final 1st leg
Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Slough for the first leg of the EP Cup Semi-Final with almost the full squad. Sheffield Steeler's back-up, Davey Lawrence, started in net in place of injured Pasi Raitanen, and Paul Jones who was given leave due to having a final year degree exam. Matt Haywood joined the team again and Patrik Moberg iced for the full game.
A great game in which the Scimitars played hard and well for the sixty minutes. They dominated much of the first period, making Slough work for any sustained possession. Sheffield took the lead at 7.14 through Robert Dowd, from Steve Wallace, after some good play round the Jets net. The whole team moved the puck well with crisper passing than at the weekend, and with several players, including Brittle and Dowd, stealing the puck from Slough to create turnovers. Lawrence made some good close-up saves and they deserved to be 1-0 up at the end of the first.
An early equalizing goal at 20.33 was scored by Bowman from Chinn before the play had really got going. The Jets came out more determined in the 2nd period and the game became more physical with several penalties being called. Sheffield's powerplay forced some good saves by Skinns at times, at other times, Slough's penalty killing was effective. Slough took the lead with a PP goal at 35.32 scored by Chinn for a 2-1 scoreline at the end of the 2nd period, despite Slough being outshot.
Both teams continued to work hard in the third, though with more penalties taken. Slough were able to capitalise on one of their powerplays, extending their lead at 53.41 through Krajicek, but the Scimitars were unable to find a way past Skinns despite trying to the end. The final score for the first leg was 3-1, giving Slough a 2 goal lead for the 2nd leg. Dowd was awarded MOM.
