Sheffield Scimitars v Telford Tigers 9-2 W 30.12.07
Knock-out Cup weekend
The Sheffield Scimitars had their full team on the ice for this game, a rare occurrence since November and one they needed to capitalise on, though with three imports icing as Paul Jones went between the pipes.
In the second of their two Cup games this weekend, they took on a shorter-benched Telford Tigers yet again on Sunday, and Sheffield needed a win after Saturday's tough loss. The start was not the best for Sheffield with Telford camping in front of net with 3 quick shots and a goal within 0.16 seconds by Kostolny. After shutting Hornak down successfully, Gibson was given a 5+Game penalty for accidental high sticks on Williams at 11.49. Despite Telford creating pressure around the Scimitars' net of their 5 minute powerplay, Sheffield got the puck out of their zone for an excellent shorthanded goal by Slamiar at 12.56 from a great pass by Moberg who had drawn the keeper to his side to allow Slamiar open space to tap the puck in for a 1-1 period.
Slamiar got on the scoresheet again at 27.42 after skating the length of the rink from a short pass by Moberg to blast a shot straight into the top of the net. Then it was Moberg's turn to score on the powerplay at 32.09 as Archer drew the goalie to one side before passing to Moberg, who made no mistake to go 3-1. Dowd flicked the puck into the back of the net at 34.00 after a good run down the rink to clinch a 2+0 second period. Some good defending kept the Telford forwards from getting all their shots on goal reaching their target during their many rushes down the ice, though another D-man was lost after Goodman was handed a 2+10 minute penalty.
Wallace started off a prolific goal-scoring period at 40.50 assisted by Dowd and Morgan, followed by an unassisted goal at 44.58 by Dowd, who, with some superb puck control, skated down the rink, rounded the net and slotted home unassisted.
Next on the board was Tom Squires who shot high into the net at 46.57 for his first EPL goal. Hornak retrieved one for Telford at 47.36 from a 3 on 1 chase in on goal and passing across the front of net. At 48.35 Wallace scored and at 55.01, with Heslop being replaced in Telford goal by Barlow. Dowd got his hat-trick at 55.01 to end the scoring spree at 9-2, with the Scimitars at last finding the back of the net with some quality finishing and Tom Squires claiming MOM. The only downside of the game was Moberg having to leave the game in the third after a Telford player took him down.
