Match Report | 25th January 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 4-3 Romford Raiders
After penalty shootout
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 19th January 2008
4-3 OT & PS
The Scimitars took on an up-graded Raiders for their 3rd encounter of the season, having had two earlier decisive victories. Patrik Moberg was back in the line-up again, but the Scimitars were missing Tom Squires and Matt Haywood (U18's) and Pasi Raitanen.
Sheffield started off well after an early penalty of 2+10 on Sharp for cross-checking Barron into the boards, but Romford were the better team in the first. Mark Lee, in net for Romford, had to make some good saves but the home team also had several good chances throughout the game where some excellent shots hit the post or crossbar.
After crowding the net and shots on goal, Romford then took advantage of their first powerplay with a goal at 7.06 by Pinnington. Another goal at 8.46 by Bochna gave Romford the lift, and although Slamiar and Moberg still managed a couple of short-handed breakaway shots, Romford began peppering Jones in net with short range shots. There was a break in play to clear blood from the ice after Goodman was injured though he returned to the ice following some stitches. Sheffield were outplayed in the first period with it ending 0-2 and Romford looking dangerous when in possession.
The Scimitars came out with much more determination in the 2nd , cutting the deficit by one with a well-taken early goal by Wallace at 20.40 after some good passing round the goal by Dowd and Butterworth. Play was more even between the teams, though shots on goal were in favour of Sheffield in this period with Lee blocking Sheffield's chances of equalising. Romford regained their 2 goal lead at 32.11 on a breakaway by Timms to go top corner just under the crossbar.
Scimitars gained a 5-on-3 advantage at 37.41 following a fracas in front of goal after a fumbled save with Sharp racing in, taking a Scimitars player and himself onto the back of a prostrate Lee, after which there were several scuffles. Dowd took advantage of this PP with a slapshot from a Morgan pass from the goal line to end the period 2-3 down.
There was plenty of good defensive and offensive play by the Scimitars in the 3rd, after they had equalised 3-3 at 43.54 when Farmer slotted the puck in round the post after Morgan and Woolhouse had shots towards goal. Farmer was given a 5+game penalty at 51.45 for high sticks, but with the help of some excellent penalty killing before Romford also went in the box, the Scimitars survived the major penalty. Concerted efforts to get the winning goal in regulation failed and overtime followed.
The tempo raised as Scimitars outshot the Raiders by 5:1 in overtime but no goal settled the difference and another penalty shoot-out followed. Jones saved the 3 Raiders penalty takers with Peter Slamiar scoring the game-winning goal with a fine shot and a great end to the match, with MOM going to Paul Jones.
