Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 5th January 2008

Sheffield Scimitars v Peterborough Phantoms 4-3 OT 5.1.08

The Sheffield Scimitars faced Peterborough Phantoms on the Saturday and needed a win as the teams were tied on League points, but with the Phantoms having two games in hand. It was another feisty game and the second meeting on consecutive weekends with Sheffield being shut out 2-0 in Peterborough for a Knockout Cup game. The Scimitars were missing Patrick Moberg again after having an excellent comeback from injury the previous weekend, and Rob Dowd who was ill, though both tried the warm-up. Several players were playing with injuries or illness.

The Scimitars got on the scoreboard early this week, almost off the face-off at 00.21 by Stephen Wallace from an excellent pass by Simon Butterworth. There was a short break in play after the referee took a hit, the first of three in the evening. Some nice passing moves and shots on goal by Wallace, Slamiar and Farmer but to no avail. Whilst Morgan was in the penalty box, Peacock looked as if he would score on a breakaway, but missed hitting the puck when right in front of net. The period ended 1-0.

With both sides attacking and Peterborough creating turnovers, they managed to equalise at 25.08 through Rempel. Some big saves by Raitanen and one on the penalty kill kept the score 1-1 followed shortly after by an excellent goal by Brittle, who stripped the puck off a Phantom just inside the blue line, cut through the defence and shot in front of net at 34.09. The referee had a busy game keeping order between the two teams. Peterborough again equalised for 2-2 by a shorthanded goal at 37.13 from a rebound.

Sheffield created several chances but were prevented from getting to loose pucks in front of net by the Peterborough defence, though they regained the lead at 52.31 with a blistering shot by Duncombe from the blue line and tipped slightly by Wallace. Peterborough did not give up and scored at 55.25 for 3-3 to force the game into overtime. Miller took a hooking penalty at 59.47 and then Ben Morgan given a slashing penalty trying to stop a Rempel breakaway, which Pasi saved. With both sides sitting penalties, Slamiar took off down the ice with Archer in front looking for the pass, but Slamiar just fired in a bullet for the Scimitars to take the two points with Stuart Brittle awarded MOM.
