Match Report | 30th January 2008 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-2 Slough Jets
Face Off: 7.45pm, Tuesday 22nd January 2008
2nd Leg of EP Cup semi-finals 3-2 win
4-5 loss on aggregate
The Scimitars won this game but lost on the aggregate score of 4-5. Slough Jets came into town with a 2 goal advantage from the away leg last week, which they won 3-1, so Sheffield had their work cut out to start with, and they were still missing Pasi Raitanen plus Tom Squires.
The Scimitars got off to the worst possible start with a goal scored right at the beginning, 1.11 by Steve Moria, who went top corner through a partial screen of players. The Scimitars dominated possession after that for the next 6 minutes, putting a couple of shots on goal for no reward. A flurry of penalties gave firstly Sheffield a 5-on-3 powerplay, which was then reversed in favour of the visitors. Not long after the Scimitars got back to full strength, Slough put traffic in front of the net for their 2nd goal of the night (1-5 on aggregate) at 13.30, which rather deflated the Scimitars.
The Scimitars re-grouped for the start of the second and with some early shots saved by both keepers, play went end to end. Archer retrieved one goal back for the Scimitars at 29.38 off a pass across the face of the net by Slamiar. Any momentum from that goal was stalled as Sheffield's penalty killing unit was called into action again during another 5-on-3 for Slough, and did an excellent job. After some good work in Slough's zone once the penalty expired, Wallace pulled the score level on the night to 2-2 at 34.55, assisted Dowd. Despite some good shifts and hard work the period ended without any further scoring.
Both teams seemed intent on icing the puck at the beginning of the third, but Slough got a chance with a breakaway shot that was saved, but with a penalty resulting. Great penalty killing again for the home side, before it was Slough's turn to go in the box, Spearing picking up a 2+10. Moberg and Slamiar combined well for some good chances though all the team really put the Jets under pressure in the final five minutes of the game. Slamiar got the go-ahead goal in the game at 58.35 but with the Scimitars needing another goal to force overtime and a frantic couple of minutes followed for both sides. Sheffield won the home leg 3-2 but Slough now progress to the final against either Bracknell or Milton Keynes. MOM award went to Peter Slamiar.
