MATCH REPORT
Sheffield Scimitars v Chelmsford Chieftains 1-2 22.12.07
On Saturday, the Scimitars faced Chelmsford Chieftains missing Peter Slamiar, Patrik Moberg and Ryan Johnson, plus Robert Farmer and Tom Squires who were playing for the U18's. With Paul Jones starting in net this meant the Scimitars were down to one import on the ice, though two players were added to the roster from the ENL, Matt Haywood and Scott Morris. The Scimitars seemed rather down-beat and although they had good possession at times, they could not finish.
Both teams took early penalties with shots on goal at both ends. Wallace was in perfect position for a superb breakaway shorthanded but to no avail, followed by Chelmsford taking the lead at 6.01 through Long on their own shorthanded attack on goal. There was some good powerplay pressure from the Scimitars followed by a big save by Jones from Marostega coming straight out of the box. Sheffield could not find the equaliser in the first period despite some good shots on goal but also passes going astray or wide of the net.
A rather passion-less period by both teams which included a delay after a lineswoman was injured by a flying puck and was substituted by another official. The Chieftains went up 2-0 from a well-deflected shot that went high into the net at 38.06 and although play was end to end with saves at both ends, the second period ended 0-2.
Play continued end to end though without the usual intensity but the Scimitars seemed unable to finish the few shots they had on goal with others going high or wide. Moffat stopped a shot deliberately with his helmet to get a whistle so an injured Williams could be dragged over the boards by his teammates At 51.43 Jones saved a penalty shot awarded to Long, who was hauled down when clear in on goal , and this seemed to energize the team. Finally the Scimitars broke Moffat's shutout at 56.08, much to the goalie's fury, scored by Matt Haywood for his first Scimitars' goal, and assisted by Jon Woolhouse. A rather lack-lustre game by a much depleted Scimitars' team finished 1-2 with Jones picking up MOM award.
