Face Off: 7.00pm, Saturday 29th December 2007

Peterborough Phantoms v Sheffield Scimitars 2-0 (L) 29.12.07
Knockout Cup

On Saturday the Scimitars took to Peterborough ice, for the second of their Knock-out Cup games, in front of a sizeable home crowd, and a good contingent of travelling fans who had donned some great fancy dress for the occasion.

For the first time since losing Patrik Moberg during the game on 24th November, the Scimitars had 4 imports on the ice, with Peter Slamiar returning from 'flu and injury and Pasi Raitanen starting in net, James Archer returning to Peterborough for his first game since signing with Sheffield, and Neil Abel also back from illness. Missing from the line-up were Lee Haywood and Tom Squires.

The game started with plenty of physical and feisty play which triggered some penalties, giving the Scimitars a short spell of 4-on-3 with any shots saved. The Scimitars worked hard but did not create many really good scoring chances, unlike Peterborough who, through Peacock, capitalised on a chance to pick up the puck in the Scimitars' zone, passed to Rempel who was closing in alone on Raitanen to flick the puck up over his shoulder for their first goal at 06.18. Raitanen made a great save during Peterborough's 5-on-3 PP for 25 seconds, which was followed shortly after by a disregarded Scimitars' goal despite players and goal judge indicating it was a goal. The period ended 1-0 to Peterborough.

There were minimal penalties and no scoring in the second period, though with end to end play and both teams working hard. Although the Scimitars outshot the Phantoms almost 2:1, Wall gained in confidence from the shots that Sheffield were able to send his way. Moberg looked good in his first game back as the team had to re-adjust to different lines again.

Sheffield never gave up trying even when Peterborough scored their second at 53.28 by the new signing, Maris Zeidins, who combined with Rempel and Peacock for a well-worked goal again to complete the scoring 2-0. Although there were some good individual performances and the team worked hard to the end, the bounce did not go their way. MOM was awarded to Slamiar.
