Face Off: 6.30pm, Sunday 6th January 2008

Chelmsford Chieftains v Sheffield Scimitars 4-6 6.1.08

After a tough overtime win against Peterborough on Saturday night, the Scimitars travelled down to Chelmsford to face another team they have struggled with this year. Still missing Patrik Moberg and Rob Dowd and with other players not 100% well, this was another match that Sheffield needed to win to remain in contention. In the line-up on Sunday, but for the opposition, was ex-Scimitar Mark Stewart, on his home debut and second match with the Chieftains.

The game was not very old, 02.04, before Archer and Long decided to go for it and got 2+2 for their pains. Despite some early attacking by the Chieftains, Sheffield got on the scoreboard first at 05.53 with Wallace finding the back of the net on the powerplay, assisted Morgan. The Scimitars found the net again at 08.25 by Farmer from a Slamiar pass. There was plenty of end-to-end play in the first, with both teams having to kill several penalties, though with a surprisingly lower number of shots on goal in the first than for the rest of the game. The Scimitars looked more in control at the end of the first at 2-0 up.

Both teams killed off penalties successfully at the start of the second period with the Chieftains stepping up the pressure initially and dominating possession in Sheffield's zone, forcing some big saves by Raitanen. Eventually the puck was taken down the ice for a lovely pass across the face of the net by Barron to Woolhouse who slotted it home for 3-0 at 28.51. Chelmsford, who were always quick on the break, and outshot Sheffield in the 1st and 2nd periods, were allowed close in on net for Stewart to open their scoring at 30.50. The Scimitars took a 4 goal lead with two unanswered goals, the first at 37.23 when Slamiar was in a great position to bat down a rebound which came off Moffatt from an initial shot from Squires, followed by Brittle making it 5-1 assisted Woolhouse and Gibson.

Chelmsford changed their goalie for the start of the third, and then scored early at 40.41 with another Stewart goal. He looked dangerous around net in the second and third, combining well with Palov for three of their four goals and keeping Pasi Raitanen busy. Palov scored their third at 54.09, assisted Stewart, on the powerplay for an accidental high sticks by Morgan. With Chelmsford's spirits up and shots being saved at the other end, they were buzzing in Sheffield's zone and took the score to 4-5 at 56.07 by Mckenzie with Stewart assisting again. A time out by Sheffield calmed the play down and the Scimitars were able to reduce the pressure with a powerplay goal at 58.38 by Archer, assisted Slamiar and Wallace. Scimitars took their first League win over Chelmsford this season by 6 goals to 4, with Farmer awarded man of the match and Stewart for his 2+2 for Chelmsford.
