Match Report | 4th December 2007 » Swindon Wildcats 6-2 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.00pm, Sunday 2nd December 2007
The Scimitars travelled down to Swindon on Sunday for their third meeting of the season, though having won the previous two in a convincing manner, they lacked the pace at times to counter Swindon's offence in this game.
Sheffield were wrong-footed by an early penalty at 1.20, which they killed off with Wallace also managing a short-hand attempt on goal. Petkoff took advantage of an intercepted pass to score at 4.06 but the Scimitars could not find the equaliser during a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity. Whilst there were some good attempts on goal, Craze was equal to them, and although Sheffield's passing did not appear as crisp or accurate at times as it can be, Swindon could be given some credit for this. The Scimitars did kill off three penalties in quick succession, with Dowd on a shorthanded break but the shot went high. Just after all the penalties had expired, Petkoff broke free to score his second at 19.55 to end the period 2-0.
The Scimitars needed an early break in the second but it was Raitanen having to make some quick glove saves as pressure built in the visitor's end resulting in Petkoff's hat-trick at 23.22. Another fine glove save by Raitanen from a 1 on 1 shot was followed by a Scimitars' goal being washed out as the whistle had blown before the puck crossed the line, and then Slamiar having his good shot saved. Craze mopped up the 15 shots on him in the second with several others getting deflected high or wide. With Swindon quick on the break, they scored two more in the second, at 31.19 by Adam Brittle and on a 5-on-3 powerplay at 34.28 by Richardson after a few saves made. Raitanen came out of goal then to be replaced by Jones, who had just one save on a Petkoff breakout, ending the period 5-0.
An early goal by Shudra on the PP, assisted Dowd and Wallace, was some consolation, but again Swindon broke clear for a 2-on-0 in front of goal for Swindon's 6th at 43.34. The Scimitars applied more pressure on Craze and did outshoot Swindon, but could only put one more behind him at 54.08 with a Dowd backhander off a pass from Archer and Wallace. The game ended 6-2 with Farmer getting MOM along with Craze for Swindon.
