Match Report | 18th December 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-5 Milton Keynes Lightning
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 16th December 2007
A short-benched Sheffield Scimitars team had another top opponent to face on Sunday, the Milton Keynes Lightning, after a difficult game on the previous night. The Scimitars were still missing the three GB players and Moberg, with Jones added to the injury list from Saturday's game. Pasi Raitanen was recalled to start the game rather earlier than scheduled, after resting a groin injury, and Ben Bowns brought up as back-up.
The Scimitars came out fast with Slamiar getting an early shot on target, though this was quickly followed by a Milton Keynes goal which was disallowed, and a penalty on the visitors awarded. MK scored another disallowed goal at 3.50 due to the net being off its moorings, though Clarke did finally get one that counted at 5.34 with a high shot off a rebound. A series of penalties followed, though more so for MK, with Raitanen having to make some good saves to prevent MK from increasing their score and the period ended 0-1.
Clarke scored Milton Keynes second goal early in the second period, at 20.45 after receiving a pass from Alassaarela, followed by a powerplay goal by Carr for their third goal at 23.17, a screened shot, which gave Raitanen no chance and with the Scimitars struggling to keep possession of the puck in their zone. Slamiar was sent heavily into the boards at 28.39 after a chase for the puck with no penalty given and he left the ice and the game with an injury. This seemed to galvanise the home team and Barron scored a much-needed powerplay goal at 29.45, assisted Wallace. There was some good blocking of potential shots on goal by Goodman and Morgan with another Scimitars' PP goal scored by Farmer at 35.57 from a long pass by Duncombe, which ended the period at 2-3.
The Lightning scored again early in the 3rd period at 43.46 after a scramble in front of goal with Clarke getting his hat trick from an un-cleared rebound. Sheffield replied at 46.00 with their 3rd PP goal and MOM Farmer's 2nd of the night, unassisted. Just as Sheffield pulled one back, a penalty shot was awarded after a MK player was hauled down when closing in on goal. Alassoarela scored at 46.47 to complete the scoring at 3-5 but much credit has to go to the Scimitars who kept fighting back throughout the game, despite a shortening bench and the consequent line changes, and players playing with injuries.
The Scimitars have another two home games next week, v Chelmsford on Saturday 22nd Dec at 7.30pm, and against Slough Jets on Sunday, 23rd Dec. at 5.30pm when it is 'Kids for a Quid' night.
