Match Report | 18th December 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-5 Guildford Flames

Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 15th December 2007

Sheffield had a tough double-headed home weekend, taking on table-toppers, Guildford Flames on Saturday and Milton Keynes Lightning on Sunday. The Scimitars battled it out despite being very depleted for these games with Robert Dowd, Lloyd Gibson and James Archer on GB U20's duty in Latvia, Patrik Moberg still injured and Pasi Raitanen initially being rested, so it was always going to be a tough weekend. The Scimitars drafted in Tom Squires again together with Matt Haywood for the weekend.
The Scimitars had a 2-0 record against the Flames this season and despite the forced line changes, they started the game with energy and possession, which put pressure on the Flames, resulting in some early penalties. Sheffield were unable to get many scoring chances on the man advantage with Watkins saving what did get through. End to end play with the Scimitars working well, but the Flames charged down rink to score their first goal at 12.08, Jones made the initial save but Zavoral took advantage of melee in crease to put in the rebound. A 2nd Guildford goal was scored by Bronniman at 16.33 after a pass forward from behind the net by Foremsky to end the period 2-0.

The Scimitars continued to work hard during some powerplay opportunities but were again limited to few shots on goal. The Scimitars made it 1-2 after Slamiar got a shot towards goal that Butterworth buried for a quality goal at 26.31 whilst the teams played 4-on-4. Guildford scored their 3rd after Jones saved the puck on the line only to be pushed into the net by a Scimitar with Zavoral landing heavily on top of him. With the third line working hard all night, they put Sheffield up to 2-3 through an excellent goal by Woolhouse, topshelf off a spinning puck from Farmer, assisted Matt Haywood. The Scimitars showed that despite missing some top players, they could give Guildford a good run with their 4 imports and Kohut out injured.

A one-on-one breakaway was scored by Guildford at 49.37 with Jones taken into a post and the boards by a player and had to retire with the mild concussion received in the 2nd period incident. He was replaced by Pasi Raitanen, who had not time to settle before Bronnimann put Guildford up 5-2 lifting the puck up high at 50.25. Sheffield had a goal disallowed at 52.58 as it was deemed put in by a high stick, though they did score their third at 55.36 by Farmer (MOM) for his first EPL goal from a rebound pass by Matt Haywood & assisted by Ryan Johnson to end the game 3-5.

It was a gutsy performance by a hard-working, depleted Scimitars team in front of a disappointing crowd, and in which the third line and juniors shone and scored goals too.
