Match Report | 9th November 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-2 Guildford Flames

After penalty shootout
Face Off: 2.30pm, Saturday 3rd November 2007

Sheffield gained two points in their League game on Saturday after it took overtime and penalty shots to determine another win over 3rd placed Guildford.

Saturday's early afternoon game was a tense affair and one of the Scimitars' best at iceSheffield this season against a full-strength Guildford, with Sheffield back to winning ways again despite the rotating ice-officials.

After an exceptional 1st period and 2 superbly worked early goals it didn't look like a game going to overtime. Dowd scored from an accurate pass from Wallace at 2.02 followed quickly by another great passing manoeuvre at 3.27 by Slamiar from Moberg. Ollie Barron had a good chance after he stole the puck in the neutral zone for a breakaway but shot just high. The Scimitars had the majority of the possession with Dowd flying but Guildford pulled one back at 16.49 by Zavoral for a 2-1 first period with a 2-man refereeing system.

The 2nd period started with three officials but dropped to two again while a pair of skates was found for the referee whose skate blade had broken. Guildford were finding their feet and forcing the pace more with their equalising goal coming at 22.36 after Raitanen made two good saves but couldn't get to the third. Scimitars did have chances on net but Watkins made the saves, Moberg went down at 27.25 after getting a puck on the leg. Plant received a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of the referee at 37.08.

Guildford started to pick up penalties with Zavoral being ejected at 40.43. Scimitars were unable to capitalise on the subsequent 5-on-3 powerplay though Raitanen came under pressure during their powerplay. The Scimitars really upped their game with some fast hockey played by both teams.

Five minutes of overtime ensued with both teams skating fast and hard to get the game -winner. Guildford thought they had won it when the puck was fired into the net but the referee waived it off as the net was off its mooring, causing Plant to get ejected for a second 10 minute misconduct.

Penalty shots had to decide the game with Raitanen coming up with 3 big saves from Potts, Smital and Savage to allow Moberg the chance to score on the Scimitars' last attempt. A great game for 2 points to stay 2nd and Duncombe was awarded MOM.
