Match Report | 22nd November 2007 » Peterborough Phantoms 4-0 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 7.00pm, Saturday 17th November 2007

Sheffield Scimitars faced Peterborough Phantoms for their final Cup game knowing they were through to the semi-finals as long as Peterborough did not score 7 clear goals past them, regardless of the result of Peterborough's game against Telford on Sunday.

With Peterborough's new coach in place and two wins under their belt the previous weekend, Peterborough were going all out for a place in the semi-finals despite the huge task. The Scimitars were down to 2 imports through injury (Shudra and Raitanen) and without top Cup goal-scorer Steve Wallace through illness, but with Lloyd Gibson back in the line-up fresh off the plane from Canada just in time for the game. Also drafted in was Tom Squires from U18's and ENL for his first EPL game.

The game started off at a pace though the Scimitars found themselves killing off a 5-on-3 penalty at 6.44. The Scimitars seemed to dominate the first period despite being outshot, though play was end to end along with some hard-fought battles centre ice and in the corners to gain possession with the period ending 0-0.

The Scimitars continued dominate play at times in the second period with some good puck control and chases down the ice, but Peterborough prevented Sheffield from setting up many decent scoring opportunities though those chances created were stopped by King, and James Goodman's goal was waived off because of a man in the crease. Against the run of play, and after nearly 2 scoreless periods, Peterborough were awarded the first goal at 37.29, which appeared to hit the crossbar. They scored their second goal 2 minutes later at 39.29 with Peacock on a short-handed breakaway, with a great passing shot to Gough who scored to go into the 2nd period break 2-0 up.

The Scimitars came out in the third looking rather lack-lustre, with many passes going astray to the opposition, which was reflected in the ratio of shots on goal of 4 on King to 17 on Jones. The third line worked hard but Peterborough closed down any scoring opportunities, whilst Peacock was awarded a goal at 46.11, which again seemed to cannon off the crossbar. Rempel scored the final goal at 58.33 through a screen and Sheffield finished the game shorthanded for a final score of 4-0 to Peterborough. However the Scimitars had made it through into the semi-finals against Slough, date to be arranged.

The Scimitars have a big weekend coming up, facing Milton Keynes away on the 24th November and then at home against Slough on Sunday 25th at 5.30pm.
