Match Report | 27th November 2007 » Milton Keynes Lightning 3-5 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 7.00pm, Saturday 24th November 2007
The Scimitars travelled to Milton Keynes on Saturday with a full squad for the first time for a few matches. Ron Shudra, Pasi Raitanen and Steve Wallace returned to the line-up for the third encounter of the season in a bid to claim the Scimitars first win over the Lightning.
The game did not get off to an auspicious start as, before the Scimitars had had chance to get rid of their bus-legs, they were given a penalty at 0.07 seconds and MK's claimed their first goal at 1.03 by Nick Poole, followed quickly by another Sheffield penalty. It looked like a long night was in store with MK dominant in the Scimitars' zone for the initial 5 to 10 minutes. A second 'goal' was waived off as it was kicked in, followed by a short-handed break-away by Wallace, but the shot was saved. The Scimitars slowly worked their way into the whistle-happy game and once they equalised at 16.34 through Wallace from Dowd and Butterworth they looked more confident. Milton Keynes' reply was swift but another goal was washed out with a man in the crease. Again a penalty was called on the Scimitars but this time they capitalised on the short-handed break-out with Dowd combining with Shudra and Morgan for the go-ahead goal at 18.29, ending the period 1-2 up.
A pep talk in the break must have worked as the second period was all Scimitars when a four minute spell and some dominant play put them 5-1 up. Slamiar got on the sheet with a one-timer at 24.19 from Moberg, followed by a disallowed goal, but the 4th one was a good goal at 23.08 from a pass across the face of the net from Wallace to Dowd. As MK got frustrated they began picking up the penalties allowing the Scimitars' 5th and final goal (PP) at 24.40 which was deflected, via Wallace and Butterworth, past the goalie from an initial blue-line blast by Shudra. The Lightning called a time-out to settle their nerves and the remainder of the period was scoreless as both netminders made some good saves. Moberg went off with an injury in the second and did not return.
Sheffield looked as though they were cruising by the end of the 2nd but Milton Keynes came out in the 3rd determined to redress the imbalance, This they did with an early goal at 43.59 from Alasaarela, who had time in front of goal. Another at 24.40 by MK on the powerplay sparked the game into life again with both sides battling hard plus a few roughing penalties for scuffles. Both netminders withstood the pressure, with Pasi Raitanen making some great saves to keep the score at 3-5 and with Robert Dowd picking up MOM award.
