Match Report | 19th October 2007 » Wightlink Raiders 2-3 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 14th October 2007
Sunday's game saw Steve Duncombe return to action, alongside Steve Wallace with repaired skates, though Robbie Dowd was missing from the line-up following his post-game late night hospital check-up. Wightlink's passing and possession of the puck was improved on the previous night, though the scoreline indicated a much tighter game despite the 73-22 SOG differential.
There were indications from the face-off that the Raiders meant business after some early shots fielded by Pasi, a checking from behind by Endicott at 4.42 and an un-penalised slashing on Peter Slamiar. The first period was littered with penalties, 26 mins for Raiders to 10 mins for Sheffield as referee Cloutman penalised the rough play. Despite some hard work and good scoring chances, IOW Sojack (N/M) kept the Scimitars off the scoreboard with some great saves until they scored two quick powerplay goals at 18.01 by Morgan and 19.00 by Duncombe to end the period 0-2.
The teams traded goals in the 2nd period as Wightlink pulled the game back to 1-2 at 27.05 by Endicott, with Morgan scoring at 32.38 to restore the two goal cushion and Raitanen making some quality saves to maintain it. Sojak in the Wightlink net continued his Man of the Match performance to deny the Scimitars any more goals despite the high shot count and good pressure on goal by all three lines. Endicott took an early shower after checking James Goodman from behind and being given his second 10 minutes penalty in the game for the same offence. Lloyd Gibson took on IOW's Robinson in a centre ice fight and gained a black eye for his efforts.
While the Scimitars continued to dominate play, with penalties down to 2 minutes on each team, and though shots on goal were down slightly on both goalies they made good saves to keep their teams in the game. and Hargreaves' goal at 49.26 ensured a tense but noisy final ten minutes of the game. However, the Scimitars fought on to take another 2 points, with all three lines playing very well as a team and Peter Slamiar earning his MOM award playing with skill and running rings round Romford Raiders.
