Match Report | 19th October 2007 » Wightlink Raiders 1-6 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Saturday 13th October 2007
Sheffield Scimitars emerged bloodied but not beaten in a feisty and physical double header weekend in the Isle of Wight. It was the first meeting between these two teams since ex-Scimitar Les Millie left Sheffield to take up coaching duties on the island and it was a battle of wits between the coaches in which the Neil Abel's Scimitars came off the winners with 4 points.
Both games were fast paced in the small rink and the Raider's physical game plan raised the temperature between the players, though the Scimitars had a 50 strong band of noisy travelling support to back them all the way.
On Saturday, Sheffield gained the upper-hand in the first 6 minutes of the game with an early goal from Morgan at 5.43, which beat Sojak (N/M) on his far post. Despite having to kill off 10 minutes of penalties they still managed to outshoot the Raiders for 0-1 first period, with Wallace and Dowd combining for some good chances.
Peter Slamiar's shot from the blue line flew in over the goalie's shoulder at 22.42 causing the Raiders to become more frustrated with the Scimitar's domination of the play and possession of the puck. The game became more physical, Morgan was felled by Coles followed by Millie on Goodman though some IOW's rough tactics began to get penalised but by no means all. The Scimitars' answer was to add a further goal at 32.51 when Moberg shot high into the back of the net to go 0-3. Duncombe was missing after an injury required hospital treatment.
The Raiders scored their first at 47.01 by Franc but Sheffield replied with three more, Slamiar at 49.45, Dowd at 52.02 and a great goal by Barron at 59.24 to end the game 1-6, with the Raiders being out-shot by 49 to 19. The win came at a price though with two players having a trip to hospital with injuries and others coming off rather battered. A well-deserved result with Ben Morgan collecting the MOM award.
