Match Report | 13th October 2007 » Swindon Wildcats 1-5 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.45pm, Saturday 29th September 2007
Sheffield Scimitars travelled down to Swindon on Saturday to face a team who had recently made changes to their goaltending department and signed last year's Bracknell Bee's champion-winning and GB goalie, Nathan Craze, so they were expecting a tight game.
After some end-to-end play in the first ten minutes of the game during which there some nice creative play, with saves by both Raitanen and Craze before Sheffield struck three times in a 6 minute spell. The first goal came at 09.57 after some good passing from Morgan and Wallace to Dowd who slotted the puck home under the goalie's pads. The 2nd followed quickly at 11.00 minutes when Moberg carried the puck in, passed to Slamiar who confidently scored through through the legs of the moving goalie. Fiddes was sent to the penalty bos for 2+10 checking from behind on Gibson The 3rd of the period was scored at 15.35 in a neat backhanded lift over the goalie by Barron, assisted Slamiar (MOM).
Swindon came out fighting in the second and seemed to have the greater edge during end to end hockey but both team's defence cut down on good scoring chances on either side for a 0-0 second period. Despite Swindon having 6 minutes of penalties, including being 2 men down for a spell, Sheffield's powerplay units did not get many good scoring chances as the Wildcats intercepted many passes. The Scimitars seemed to have lost they cohesion they had in the 1st period while Swindon applied the pressure.
After much neutral zone activity in the early part of the 3rd period, the Scimitars extended their lead through some nice work between Morgan and Butterworth to Wallace who took puck round the goalie and slotted it home at 47.41. Wallace completed the Scimitars' scoring at 50.58 with an unassisted goal after a great run up the ice, though all three lines looked much more threatening in front of goal than they had in the second. Swindon managed to prevent Raitanen claim a deserved shut-out by a high deflected goal by Swindon's MOM, Matt Davies, but Sheffield went home 5-1 winners.
