Match Report | 24th October 2007 » Romford Raiders 3-8 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 21st October 2007

Sheffield Scimitars completed their 5th consecutive road game down in Romford on Sunday with the 2nd win of the weekend despite not playing their best hockey. The Scimitars were missing Dowd, Woolhouse and Strawson from the line-up, Jones started in net for his first League game of the season and ex-Sheffield Geoff Woolhouse was in net for Romford, on loan from Nottingham Panthers.

It was rather a roller-coaster first period as goals were traded, though the Scimitars did hold the lead for nearly 10 minutes after Patrick Moberg scored the 1st at 4.10 mins following a solo run up the ice to chip the puck in over Woolhouse's shoulder. End to end play continued with Rusic from Romford eventually equalising at 38.28. Sheffield restored the lead almost immediately from a shot by Lloyd Gibson which then was put in off a Romford player's skate. The lead was short-lived as play went back down the ice with Marshall capitalising on a rebound from an initial close-quarter save at 14.48. Again Sheffield went ahead with a rocket from Ron Shudra at 15.10, though the lead was only temporary as Romford scored their third to equalise again at 17.43 by Sporina.

Sheffield continued to make heavy weather of possession of the puck and passing as Romford disrupted the Scimitars' play but they did manage to restore the lead at 27.10 when Peter Slamiar sent in a bullet from centre blue line. Jones made several rapid saves after some concentrated pressure by Romford and despite being outshot again in the second, the Scimitars held on for a 3-4 lead.

Slamiar received a bloody nose in a brief fight after taking a Romford player into the boards at 42.10, requiring a change of shirt during his 6 minute penalty. Sheffield managed to put more pressure on the Romford net with Moberg scoring his second of the night at 49.35 and Wallace claiming his 4th assist, followed shortly by a hard shot from Slamiar at 51.52 which Woolhouse got a piece of but the puck bounced over his pad. Slamiar struck again at 52.18 for his hat-trick giving Woolhouse little respite as the final goal was scored at 54.45 by Ollie Barron who unleashed a shot high into the back of the net from a pass by Ryan Johnson. The game ended with Sheffield the victors at 8 goals to 3, and Jones being awarded man of the match having turned away 33 of the 36 shots on goal.
