Match Report | 30th October 2007 » Peterborough Phantoms 8-7 Sheffield Scimitars

After overtime
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 28th October 2007

The Scimitars ended the weekend with one point in Peterborough on Sunday, (though 4 points might have been a better reflection), after an old-style hockey road game that abounded in goals from two offensively-minded teams in which all four goalies shared the brunt of the attack. As a neutral it would have been a very exciting game of hockey to watch, as a supporter of either side it was nail-biting stuff as both teams traded goals galore to go into overtime.

After a lively start and shots on goal at both ends the Scimitars took the early lead at 01.46 with a neat chipped in shot by Moberg on the near-side post from a pass by Slamiar (wearing 25 on the night). Play continued at a pace with the puck being fired in on Pasi Raitanen who flashed the glove in a great save as the Phantoms gathered momentum. Peterborough equalised at 12.12 by James Spurr during a melee in front of the Scimitars net. Brent Gough gave the Phantoms the lead at 16.26 after picking up the puck off the first save and lifting it into the net. Scimitars returned the favour at 17.22, scored by #17 Moberg from #22 Gibson, and then restored their lead at 19.01 through a Butterworth back-hander into the roof of the net. However, not to be outdone, Peterborough levelled the period at 3-3 at 19.28 through Buckman.

Peterborough started the 2nd period the stronger of the two teams and managed to kill off a 5 on 3 situation before scoring their 4th goal on their powerplay at 29.10 followed shortly after at 30.39 by a high shot that dropped in behind an un-sighted Raitanen. Paul Jones replaced the injured Pasi Raitanen at 31.10 just as there was a face-off in his zone and almost immediately the Phantoms scored their 6th through a screen of players. A 6-3 scoreline seemed to imply that the Scimitars were done, but in a roller-coaster game, the Scimitars increased their pace and pressure resulting in a goal by Slamiar through Wall's legs from wrap-around for 6-4. Ron Shudra then scored off the back of the netminder's pads at 35.17 to reduce the deficit further. Fired by this Wallace levelled the scores to 6-6 going into 2nd break when he scored, assisted by Moberg who had just been released from the penalty box.

The Phantoms changed netminders for the 3rd period and the scoring run settled down though the pace and end to end hockey did not. The Scimitars regained the lead at 41.32 with a hat-trick power-play goal by Moberg, who earned man-of the match for an excellent performance. The lead was short-lived though as Morgan scored after an excellent first save by Jones in an off-side effort with no call on a high stick to the face mask allowing Peterborough to score on the rebound. Wallace had an excellent chance to win the game in regulation with a blistering shot that beat the goalie but hit the post as it emerged through his pads and deflected sideways. Overtime resulted with 4-on-3 as the Scimitars were a man down as Shudra was sitting out a penalty from the end of regulation time. With Peterborough camped in Sheffield's zone, the final goal was scored by Peterborough after 54 seconds through a faked shot and pass to Gough who hammered it home to cut short a pulsating game.

Next Saturday, the Scimitars face Guildford Flames at 2.30 in the afternoon, prior to the Steelers' game in the evening, both at iceSheffield, and it should be a lively encounter. There is the special offer for this game of CHILDREN (U16) GO FREE.
