Match Report | 13th October 2007 » Guildford Flames 3-5 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 7th October 2007

The Sheffield Scimitars achieved an excellent 4 point home and away weekend in which the team worked hard for the results. Sunday's game was always going to be the tougher one despite Guildford Flames missing players, including two of their imports, but the Scimitars fought hard to overturn a 3-1 deficit at the end of the 1st period to gain their first win (by 5 goals to 3) at the Spectrum since joining the EPL two years ago.

The Flames were coming off the back of an 8-0 thrashing in a Cup game at Milton Keynes the previous night and were still missing several players through injury so in response they came out flying in the first period. Guildford claimed the first on an organised powerplay at 6.00 (Kohut), but with Dowd replying for the Scimitars at 7.20 (from Gibson) on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Guildford restored their lead after a break-out mid-ice by Melicherik at 10.11 and Lamey added a PP goal to it just before the end of the period at 19.36. Despite the scoreline, the Scimitars outshot the Flames by 21 shots to 13 in a fast paced first period but lost the period 3-1.

The team responded to the first period break team talk, gaining momentum in the second by scoring 3 unanswered goals in 14 shots while Guildford ran into penalty problems. Kohut was ejected from the game at 21.57 for checking Dowd to the head and during the subsequent 5 minute Sheffield power-play Slamiar scored unassisted at 23.33. The Scimitars had some fast drives down the ice and created some good chances on Watkins through neat playmaking and hard work in fighting for the puck along the boards. Duncombe scored the equaliser at 32.24 when his shot from the point went high in the air off Watkins and fell back into the net. Sheffield took the lead for the first time at 36.36 when Moberg claimed his 3rd goal of the weekend with a shot high over the goalie from a good pass by Slamiar to make it 4-1.

The Scimitars defended their lead despite picking up 4 minor penalties, and even managed a great short-handed goal by Wallace as he left the Guildford defence trailing after him, he deked the goalie and calmly shot the puck over Watkins. Not long after the Flames had their own breakaway which was saved by Pasi, who was the busier goalie in the 3rd period. The Scimitars withstood the pressure and won the game 5-3 with Ben Morgan earning the MOM award.

This was a very good away win at the beginning of a stint of five consecutive road games, and will be a big boost to team confidence before the long trip down to the Isle of Wight for a double-header weekend against ex-Scimitars Les Millie and his Wightlink Raiders.
