Match Report | 14th September 2007 » Telford Tigers 2-9 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.30pm, Saturday 8th September 2007

A cracking start to the Scimitars' season with a 9-2 win on Saturday in Telford in an EPL Cup game. This really set the tone for the weekend, with every player on the team getting ice-time, including both goalies. The Scimitars' imports, Slamiar and Moburg, looked very good even with so little training time, as did Wallace, and the younger players moving up have gelled in well. Last season's players also seem revitalised with skilled and interactive play with the new season's experienced players, resulting in some great goals spread around the players demonstrating strength and depth. The game had plenty of goals, lots of powerplay and penalty-killing practice and a couple of fights with young Lloyd Gibson giving a much larger import opponent much more than he expected, followed shortly after by Dowd responding to Ashley Stanton dropping the gloves behind the play.

The Scimitars' started the season with the unusual luxury of a full complement of non British-trained players although the final signing of Patrik Moburg was only completed a three days before the game. The game set off at a good pace with the Scimitars' having plenty of possession and scored the first goal at 4.06 by Butterworth (from Wallace). Telford showed their ability to intercept the puck though and head off on a breakaway which allowed Jets to lift the puck over Pasi's shoulder, but they were not allowed many more as the defence tightened and forwards back-checked.

Penalties were plentiful and both keepers were kept busy making some good saves, especially during 5 on 3's. Heslop faced 25 shots in the first period as the Scimitars' fired in at him but the goals were scored from some great passing moves between players, the 2nd at 12.29 (PP) scored by Dowd, from Slamiar and Moburg. The 3rd of the period came at 18.05 by Slamiar from some excellent passing by Moburg and Goodman. Lloyd Gibson stood up to Telford's import, Jan Cuj, and received a 10 minute misconduct for not being able to remove his helmet. The first period ended 1-3 to the Scims with 46 minutes of penalties.

Telford came out more fired up at the start of the second period but to no avail as goals and penalty minutes mounted. Four goals were scored at: 23.42 Wallace, from Butterworth & Dowd; 25.27 (PP)Goodman, from Slamiar & Brittle; 30.47 Wallace, from Farmer & Butterworth, and finally 32.15 Brittle from Moburg & Slamiar to end the period 1-7.

The Scimitars changed goalies to start the 3rd period and Telford changed theirs at 49.05. The Scimitars pace dropped a little allowing some more breakouts by Telford but they still managed an 8th powerplay goal driven in by Butterworth from Dowd & Wallace at 46.55. With Telford still taking penalties, Scimitars wrapped up their scoring at 50.26 on the PP by Dowd, Wallace and Morgan. Finally Telford bagged their second through another breakaway by Tonks, from Kolstony & Armstrong following several good saves by Jones. Coach neil Abel was happy at the result and with the team, though next week will be a sterner test against Peterborough.
