Match Report | 27th September 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 8-3 Telford Tigers

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 23rd September 2007

In their first encounter of the season at Telford they had won 9-2 so, despite Telford gaining their first win the previous night against Peterborough, the Scimitars were hoping to keep their unbeaten Cup run going. Sheffield had Ryan Johnson back in action following his two match ban, but with Arran Strawson still off injured. Telford were without import Jan Cuj and Neil Brown.

Sheffield started well and scored their first goal at 2.46 after Steve Wallace received a pass just outside the crease from Robert Dowd, stopped the puck with his skate, spun round and shot in to the back of the net. First penalty went against the Scimitars as Peter Slamiar picked up a tripping minor as he battled for the puck along the boards but this was successfully killed off. All three lines played hard with some good passing and movement up the ice forcing some saves from the opposition goalie. Telford were quick to break out though, often keeping a player high and one breakaway was broken up over the blue line by a sprawling dive by Ben Morgan to deflect the puck from reaching Dumas. This was followed by a long passing shot by Shudra to Slamiar who sprinted down the ice, deked the goalie and D-men and slotted home the puck at 14.47 on a delayed penalty. The third goal of the period came from a great back-handed flick of the puck up into the top of the net by Simon Butterworth on the goal line at 16.35 after a pass across the net face by Dowd. A solid first 3-0 period by the Scimitars with equal shots (14) on both back-up netminders.

Telford picked up a number of penalties at the start of the 2nd period with some great passing by the Scimitars which allowed almost a minute of puck possession on a delayed penalty call. Scimitars capitalised eventually at 26.01 with a 5 on 3 powerplay goal by Morgan (from Dowd and Wallace), which was flicked up over the goalie's shoulder. Shortly after, at 27.52, Moberg struck with a shot along the ice to make it 5-0. As Telford continued to hit penalty problems and the shot count on Roberts mounted, Sheffield again scored at 36.49 by Dowd, from Moberg and Morgan. A short fracas resulted for which Telford got 2 penalty minutes but Slamiar picked up a 10 minute misconduct. He then received a further 10 mins. for misconduct which saw him ejected from the game. Telford scored shortly after at 38.00 with a shorthanded wrist shot by Dumas into the top corner. The Scimitars responded quickly with their 7th goal, a PP goal by Dowd from Duncombe and Butterworth at 38.25 and the period ended 7-1.

Telford changed their goalies for the third period and Sheffield had Slamiar out for the rest off of this game, which unfortunately showed as the Scimitars were under continual pressure in their zone for the first five minutes. Jones had made a good save on a breakaway but Telford scored at 41.22 as Dumas managed to lift the puck in a melee around net. Sheffield managed to survive sustained pressure during a Telford powerplay but Kostolny scored as this expired at 44.20 after some close-up saves had been made. Morgan (MOM) scored his second of the night at 48.44 to push the final score to 8-3 in favour of Sheffield and a good win to finish the weekend.

The Scimitars next home game is on Sunday, 30th September, with face-off at 5.30pm against Milton Keynes.
