Match Report | 21st September 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 6-1 Peterborough Phantoms

Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 15th September 2007

The Scimitars took on Peterborough Phantoms at home on Saturday in a Cup game. They were expecting much tougher opposition than the previous weekend knowing that they faced a considerably strengthened Phantoms team and with the memory of struggling to beat them last season.

The Scimitars had to start the game with a 2 minute bench penalty, followed shortly after by another delay of game penalty, both were successfully killed off with no real threat from the Phantoms. The next time the penalty killing unit was in action however, a goal did result but it was scored short-handed by Wallace from a well-timed pass across from Moberg. Two minutes later Buckman had to leave the ice after a collision on the boards with Moberg whilst both were chasing down the puck. Slamiar increased the score to 2-0 on a powerplay at 13.19 lifting the puck top-shelf after some excellent passing from Wallace and Moberg. The Scimitars were controlling the game well as demonstrated by the 16 to 5 shots-on-goal count, though Peterborough were always a threat.

The third line got in on the action at the beginning of the 2nd period with a great backhanded goal by Barron that crept under Wall's pads at 22.38, assisted Gibson and Woolhouse. Peterborough collected some hooking penalties as they tried to disrupt the dominance of the Scimitars after some excellent play and attempts on goal, which then culminated in Johnson leaving the bench to sort out James Morgan who was skirmishing with our forwards. Johnson was thrown out of the game for his efforts, receiving a 5 plus match penalty, but as Morgan offered no resistance, he remained. Shots on goal were more even in 2nd period as Raitanen made some big saves during the extended Phantom's powerplay, though Slamiar and Wallace still managed shots during that time. Both then claimed goals in between penalties, Wallace scoring at 35.01 (from Farmer and Goodman), followed by a superb wrap-around goal by Slamiar at 37.09 after a full lap and a half around the net, which left Wall looking bemused. Peterborough's James Archer decided to lift his side by a fight with Woolhouse, followed straight after by Smith receiving a 2+10 for cross-checking from behind. The fired-up Phantoms achieved their aim and Hutchinson scored a short-handed goal at 39.56 almost off the face-off to take score to 5-1 at end of the 2nd period.

End to end hockey developed during the third period with fewer penalties and scraps to break up the play. The only goal of this period came from Dowd, who had received a long pass from Shudra, his shot bounced off the post and in to the net off the keeper's back at 51.26. Final score was 6-1 with an interesting return game in store in Peterborough the following night. Excellent team effort and spirit was shown by Sheffield, with all players working hard, some great play-making especially by the new players, Slamiar, Moberg and Wallace, and last season's players showing a new spring in their skates.
