Match Report | 21st September 2007 » Peterborough Phantoms 2-5 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 16th September 2007

Sheffield Scimitars were successful in back-to-back wins against Peterborough Phantoms in home and away English Premier Cup games this weekend. Both games were tough despite the scorelines and both were littered with penalties and a fight or two, though some periods of 5-on-5 hockey broke out at times.

The Scimitars travelled down to Peterborough on Sunday expecting some hostile hockey after an excellent win the night before at home and therefore would not have been surprised when the Phantoms tried to intimidate on home territory.

The Scimitars silenced the home crowd though with a very early goal at 00.41 scored by Stephen Wallace from Robert Dowd after a turn-over centre-ice by Simon Butterworth. Peterborough then took two quick penalties followed by a disallowed goal by Sheffield. However Ron Shudra made it 2-0 at 09.41 just as another 5-on-3 powerplay finished. Peter Slamiar then received a 2+10 penalty which disrupted Sheffield's rhythm allowing Peterboro' to pull one back on a powerplay at 13.30 to go into the first period break 1-2.

Scimitars' third goal was scored early in the second by Dowd, from Goodman and Raitanen at 21.55, following which Peterborough began loading some big hits but Pasi Raitanen made some crucial saves to keep the momentum in Sheffield's favour. They could, however, have put the game out of reach if they had managed to convert number of scoring chances during the game and been awarded the 2 'missed' goals. Peterborough continued with their strong-arm tactics when Taras Foremsky received a match penalty at 37.10 for taking Wallace out mid-ice, and after which he took no further part in the game through injury.

Peterborough pulled another goal back (49.06) on the powerplay which gave them a lift at 2-3 with ten minutes left, however Sheffield replied at 51.13 via Moberg (MOM), unassisted with a great goal going in high over the goalie's shoulder. The 5th and final goal was scored at 58.04 by Steve Duncombe from Slamiar and Morgan to complete the double win and ensure that the League encounters between the teams will be feisty games. There was some great offensive and defensive team work on both nights to curtail the Phantom's firepower.

A good test for the Scimitars who passed with flying colours, although they will realise these are early days in the current campaign and will not be complacent.
