Match Report | 21st April 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-2 Swindon Wildcats

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 8th April 2007

With Sunday's game against Swindon still a must-win one, and a close ear being kept on the Peterborough v Slough score, this game was not the most fluent game of hockey that the Scimitars have played, but they did the job in regulation time despite a rather nervous start. The Scimitars were still down by three players, Ashton and Roberts to injury and Holland on GB duty.

Sheffield again dominated the opening spell, with Swindon's goalie, White, being called into action early with some saves before a powerplay goal was scored by Morgan at 4.27. Swindon replied on the powerplay by Adam Brittle in a well-worked goal. Sheffield restored the one goal lead at 12.09 (PP), with Stewart deflecting high a Millie shot from centre blue-line. Despite several good attempts on the Swindon net, Sheffield could not find the back of it, and Swindon then equalised again at 33.58 by Hornak. Reports of Slough racking up the goals in Peterborough piled on the pressure for Sheffield to score again, which came at 38.31 for Gibson who lifted a perfect pass from Towe, ending the period 3-2.

The pressure on Sheffield was reflected in some wild plays, and worsened by Goodman out injured at 49.51, though they continued to attack and were rewarded at 54.16 by a well-taken goal by Stewart from Millie, and again at 55.22 for his hat-trick with an angled shot by Stewart (MOM) from a short pass by Brittle.

And so onwards to a Coventry semi-final against Guildford at 3pm on Saturday 14th April, with the ENL Scimitars facing Haringey on the Sunday at 2.30pm.

Scoring Details: Sheffield: Stewart 3+0, Morgan 1+1, Gibson 1+0, Millie 0+3, Towe 0+2, Brittle, Shudra & Dowd 0+1. MOM: Stewart. Swindon: Brittle & Hornak 1+1, Petkoff & Fiddes 0+1. MOM: Braithwaite.
