Match Report | 8th March 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-0 Romford Raiders
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 3rd March 2007

Another decisive win for the Sheffield Scimitars to keep them in contention for the League title, especially with Bracknell dropping a point on Saturday, keeping the two teams level on points and games played.
Despite missing Millie and Roberts with injuries and Holland to a GB challenge game, the Scimitars took control of the game in the first period and never looked like losing, though there were some worries when Dowd took a nasty slash in the second period, and Towe also had to leave the game in the third.
With juggled lines to accommodate injuries, the Scimitars got off to a flying start with Dowd scoring a powerplay goal at 2.37 (from Brittle and Shudra). With Duncombe in the penalty box at 3.36, the Scimitars had more chances shorthanded, firstly from Towe breaking away and then Gibson on a good run in with Butterworth's shot saved after picking up the loose puck. Sheffield kept the pressure up during another powerplay at 9.18 but with shots on target being saved. There was a short break in play after Romford's McKenzie got injured and had to leave the ice for treatment. Romford had a brief spell of dominance while Sheffield were on the powerplay but Butterworth rectified that by scoring at 18.02 (PP) with an angled shot off a rebound assisted by Shudra and Stewart. Another goal could have followed after a good pass from Ashton to Turner, whose shot was deflected just wide of the goal.
The second period started well with the third goal scored at 20.46 by Butterworth right in front of Ambler, from passes by Gibson and Stewart. There was some great play by the Scimitars whilst both teams were short-handed, before Dowd had to leave the game due to a hard slash by Williams, who in turn was ejected on a match penalty at 24.31. With further penalties and Scimitars on a 4 on 3 advantage, Ambler was forced to make several good saves, but the Scimitars went into the second break 3-0 up after Raitanen had blocked several shots during another penalty kill at 36.03.
Dowd, back in action, scored the 4th goal at 44.06 from a tight angle after picking up a shot from Brittle that had deflected off the boards. Dowd then bagged a great hat-trick goal less than a minute later at 45.03 having received the puck from Raitanen, evaded Romford's defence whilst skating down the boards before cutting across Ambler to slot it home. Raitanen then plucked the puck out of the air in two great glove saves in succession to earn his 7th shut-out of the season off 23 shots, to seal a 5-0 victory in the last regular home game of the season and with the Scimitars finishing in style.
Scoring Details: Sheffield: Dowd 3+0, Butterworth 2 + 0, Stewart, Brittle & Shudra 0+2, Gibson & Raitanen 0+1. MOM - R. Dowd. Romford: MOM - R. Stewart
