Match Report | 1st April 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 1-2 Peterborough Phantoms
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 24th March 2007
Saturday's game commenced with Herol Bomber Graham performing a ceremonial puck drop and the Scimitars then proceeded to dominate the first period. They killed off early penalties and broke through Peterborough's defence putting 14 shots on goal and getting on the scoreboard first with a great goal scored by Millie at 7.38 who deflected a shot sent in by Stewart. Sheffield lost a player when Ashton was injured going into the boards but they finished the period 1-0 up.
Peterborough must have had a wake-up call as they increased their already hard physical play in the second period to disrupt the usual more skilful Scimitars' game. Raitanen was called into action more with numbers of shots on each goal being reversed, resulting in an equalising goal at 32.27 scored by Buckman. Duncombe was on the receiving end of a charging offence to the head followed by two successful penalty-kills by the Scimitars to end the period 1-1.
Play by both teams intensified as the third period progressed with end to end hockey and minimal penalties called, with Sheffield being prevented from creating many chances to score the winning goal. Five minutes of sudden-death overtime ensued though with Sheffield still killing off the only penalty of the period, and shortly after it expired, Peterborough's McKague scored the game-winning goal at 61.22 to give them a vital away win.
With just one point from the weekend - Scimitars can't afford to lose to Swindon away next Saturday or at home to Slough Jets next Sunday at iceSheffield, face off 6.30pm.
Game Details: Sheffield: Millie 1+0, Stewart & Goodman 0+1. MOM: J. Goodman. Peterborough: Buckman & McKague 1+0, Archer, Kohvakka, Hutchinson & Foremsky 0+1.
