Match Report | 1st April 2007 » Peterborough Phantoms 7-2 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 25th March 2007

Sheffield Scimitars opened their Play-off campaign against the in-form Peterborough Phantoms home and away, still missing one import but with Pasi Raitanen back in goal.

After Saturday's overtime defeat Sunday's trip to Peterborough was never going to be easy and when Buckman broke down the wing to open the scoring for Peterborough after 41 seconds the direction of the game was set. Scimitars rallied putting pressure on the Phantoms but could not get quality shots on Rockman. Abel had shuffled his first two lines putting Millie with Dowd and Towe as he looked to find a way to unhinge Phantoms' defence but there was further set back to the plan when Duncombe was caught just above his eye by a puck whilst on the bench, ending his game.

Phantoms second came after an intercepted pass close to their own net created a breakaway for Reynolds who netted on the backhand and when Gough made it 3-0 at 10.44 by putting the puck through Raitanen's legs the Peterborough crowd were ecstatic. Scimitars had most of the rest of the period with at least a man advantage, but despite creating many chances, could not score.

Scimitars moved to three line hockey in the second, upping the pace and reward came when Stewart scored form close range inside two minutes. Formsky restored the margin on a delayed penalty ninety seconds later and Gough's second at 30.20 resulted in a change of Goalie for Scimitars.

A fracas behind the Phantoms Goal resulted in 32 minutes of penalties between the two teams, the reduction of players available disrupting Scimitars' flow. Formsky quickly made it 6-1 and Scimitars' MOM Dowd pulled one back in the 36th minute.

McKague made it seven two minutes into the third and despite massive effort form the whole team - missing Mille after he limped to the dressing room at the close of the second, there was no way back. The 7-2 score-line does not do justice to the Scimitars' performance as they out-shot Phantoms 42 to 32.

Game Details: Peterborough: Foremsky 2+3, Gough 2+2, Buckman 1+1, Reynolds & McKague 1+0, Tonks 0+2, Compton, Kohavaka, Maile 0+1. MOM: A. Reynolds. Sheffield: Dowd 1+1, Stewart 1+0, Gibson & Towe 0+1. MOM: R. Dowd.
