Match Report | 10th February 2007 » Solihull Barons 0-4 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 4th February 2007

Another huge weekend for the Scimitars successfully completed after facing Guildford and Solihull, and still missing Robert Dowd from the line-up. Sheffield continue to hold joint top of the League position with Bracknell, who also completed a four point weekend, and have moved six points clear of 3rd placed Guildford.

Sunday's game in Solihull was the usual hard-fought physical hockey played in their small rink, with plenty of end to end play, and Pasi Raitanen earning himself a very well-deserved MOM award for making some outstanding saves throughout the game, turning away 44 shots for his shutout.

After a big defeat by rivals Telford the night before, Solihull were out to overturn Sheffield in front of their small home crowd by hustling and hitting as well as some fast skating but could not finish against an equally determined Sheffield and in-form goalie, Raitanen. The first goal of the game came early at 2.20 from an angled shot by Les Millie, from Ashton and Roberts, which was followed shortly after by some roughing on the boards which saw Millie and Mills spending 2 minutes in the penalty box. Sheffield bagged their second goal at 14.11 after some good work keeping the puck in Solihull's zone by Stewart and Millie for the assists on a Roberts' goal which he shot home from a rebound in front.

With Sheffield picking up more penalties than Solihull in the second, they were heavily out-shot by 16 shots to 5, but with Raitanen frustrating Solihull's attempts by some outstanding acrobatic saves, especially during penalty kills to keep the scoreline at 0-2 for the period. All the Sheffield players got ice-time and the third line played well, with grit and determination, with the younger players, Gibson and Holland giving as good as they got from the physical Solihull players.

With fewer penalties given in the third, play was rather more equal, and though Solihull continued to outshoot Sheffield, the period belonged to the Scimitars. The third goal was scored at 43.37 after Solihull had hit the pipework with the rebound being picked up by Stewart, with Roberts then taking it up the ice to snap it past Lansdowne. The work was completed after Duncombe was given a hooking penalty at 59.39, Solihull pulled their goalie to give them a two-man advantage and Towe intercepted a pass and skated down the ice for an empty-net goal at 59.55.

Scoring Details: Solihull: MOM D. Scott Sheffield: Roberts 2+1, Millie 1+1, Towe 1+0, Stewart 0+2, Ashton 0+1 MOM - P. Raitanen
