Match Report | 3rd February 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-1 Swindon Wildcats

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 28th January 2007

Normal service resumed for the Scimitars this weekend with two excellent wins and four more points, placing them in joint top position with Bracknell on 50 points from 32 games. Guildford only managed 1 point from 4 this weekend, making our game against them next Saturday (FO 5.00pm) an even more crucial one.

Both teams were coming off good wins the previous night and the action was fast paced and determined. Raitanen was tested almost immediately before the action moved down the ice with Stewart and Millie testing Swindon goalie, Brabon, shortly before Butterworth scored the first and only goal of the period at 9.53, when the puck trickled slowly into the net after an initial save.

The second period opened with both teams still going for goals, and Sheffield being rewarded by a great goal by Roberts at 28.26 from an excellent cross goal pass by Stewart to make it 2-1. Scimitars found the back of the net again at 28.26 when Towe weaved his way superbly through Swindon's players before finding the back of the net with ease. Sheffield then earned themselves two 10 minute misconducts but Raitanen was able to make some crucial saves before Taylor scored on a bullet angled shot for Swindon at 34.00. Lloyd Gibson, who later was presented with Player of the Month award, scored a superb goal after taking control of the puck in the offensive zone and beating a defender before lifting the puck into the top corner glove-side. The 4th and final goal of the game was then scored by Millie into the same corner at 38.58, from a great pass by Roberts, to finish the period 5-1.

End to end hockey continued, with Swindon swapping goalies for the final period, and who then thwarted all further more limited attempts at scoring by Sheffield. Both teams played hard and well, but the Scimitars scored some great goals for their deserved win, with Stuart Brittle picking up MOM award.

Scoring Details: Sheffield: Roberts 1+2, Butterworth & Millie 1+1, Gibson & Towe 1+0, Johnson, Morgan & Stewart 0+1 MOM. S. Brittle Swindon: Taylor 1+0, Long & Juhlin 0+1. MOM. S. Taylor
