Match Report | 10th February 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-2 Guildford Flames
Face Off: 5.00pm, Saturday 3rd February 2007

On Saturday the Scimitars met Guildford in a top of the table clash, and those that left early to watch the Steelers v Panthers game missed an exciting 3rd period come-back. With coach Stan Marples icing for his first game this season, Guildford needed the two points to keep level with Sheffield and Bracknell, but despite late signings of Cross and Sobala to bolster the team who were missing influential scorer, Kohut, they were unable to achieve this.
The two teams were fairly even in the first period with both teams working hard and were hungry for a win, and although Sheffield perhaps came closest to scoring several times they were unable to finish or capitalise on the six minutes of powerplay.
Sheffield can claim they scored all five goals in the match after both Guildford's goals were deflected inadvertently by Scimitars' players. Guildford got on the scoreboard first by Bronnimann from a harmless looking shot towards goal being deflected off a D-man's skate. Scimitars evened the score at 24.19 by a great goal hammered in by Stewart following some skilful work by Millie and Roberts. Guildford regained the lead at 27.05 after an initial shot was saved but then was deflected in off the goalie's stick. Guildford continued to look dangerous in the Scimitars' zone but with Sheffield also having some good individual plays.
The tempo increased in the third, especially after the equalising goal was scored at 48.28 after Shudra, who had somehow maintained control of the puck between two determined Guildford defencemen, then passed the puck into centre ice for an incoming Roberts to blast into the net. Guildford's frustration led them to accumulate 20 minutes of penalties though Sheffield's third and game-winning goal was scored even-handed at 54.18 by Stewart (MOM) from close-range and was his second of the night. Sheffield had chances on a near empty net several times during the game but it wasn't to be and the tension built up as the Scimitars fought to defend their lead right up to the final buzzer and fully deserved their win after they increased the pressure on Guildford in the 3rd period.
Scoring Details: Sheffield: Stewart 2+0, Roberts 1+1, Millie 0+2, Butterworth, Duncombe & Shudra 0+1 MOM - M. Stewart Guildford: Skene & Bronniman 1+0, Lamey 0+1 MOM. P. Dixon.
