Match Report | 21st February 2007 » Romford Raiders 1-4 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 18th February 2007

This was a crunch weekend for the Scimitars to consolidate their 1st place position in the League as they faced 2nd placed Bracknell Bees at home on Saturday, followed by a difficult road trip to Romford on Sunday. Despite injuries, suspension and illness with some players struggling with flu, the Scimitars gained two points out four, placing them 2nd to Bracknell by one point but with a game in hand over them.

The team travelled down to Essex on Sunday, following the tough Saturday home game, with Les Millie back in the line-up after serving his one game suspension (for accumulated points) but still missing Steve Roberts and without Mike Holland (U19's duty). While the ice-surface was not swimmable this time, it was still not good, although at least playable.

A fairly even first period with end-to-end play and plenty of battles on the boards in each zone to gain possession of the puck. The first penalty of the evening was called on Duncombe at 6.42 which the Scimitars were slowly killing off when Millie intercepted the puck and broke out with Morgan and Dowd, putting it past Ambler for a short-handed goal at 7.21. Pasi Raitanen had to make some good saves before the second goal came at 12.30 after some battles behind Romford's net, resulting in the puck passed out from Stewart to Duncombe on the blue line, with Towe putting a bobbling puck away. Another penalty at 16.39 by Woolhouse was successfully killed off with Dowd working hard to keep the puck in Romford's zone to count the time down and Scimitars went into the break at 0-2 up. Unfortunately Ron Shudra sustained a finger injury from the bench gate, but despite a stoppage in play due to blood being cleared off the ice, Ron was back on the ice not long after despite the pain he must have experienced.

The second period was a typical Sheffield one, rather scrappy at times though the shots on Ambler doubled to 15 during which he made some good saves. Romford pulled one goal back through Rob Stewart at 37.55 but then it was Romford's turn to take a couple of penalties near the end of the second period. Dominance by both teams alternated, but the Scimitars failed to capitalise again on the powerplay, allowing Romford to kill off a 5 on 3 and then a 5 on 4.

Ambler (MOM) denied the Scimitars any conversion of their shots on goal until 50.34 when Lloyd scored a much-needed goal at 50.34, calmly slotting it home after some good work around the net by Brittle and Towe. Although the Scimitars' passing was not always accurate, possession was often disrupted and the players were tiring, Stewart confirmed their win with an empty-net goal at 59.34 from being set up by Morgan & Millie. Towe was MOM for his 1+2 points.

Scoring Details: Romford: Stewart 1+0, Reynolds & Whiting 0+1. MOM - C. Ambler Sheffield: Towe 1+2, Stewart 1+1, Dowd & Gibson 1+0, Millie 0+2, Brittle, Duncombe & Morgan 0+1. MOM - M.Towe
