Match Report | 23rd January 2007 » Swindon Wildcats 1-4 Sheffield Scimitars

Face Off: 5.00pm, Sunday 21st January 2007

The Scimitars came away from Swindon with a well-earned two points after their only game this weekend, which puts them in joint second place alongside Bracknell, with Guildford heading the League. They played very well as a team to prevent Swindon from gaining any real foothold in the game and will be looking ahead to Wednesday night's semi-final game against Milton Keynes.

Rather against the initial run of play the Scimitars lit the goal light first at 3.52 from some good passing between Stewart, and Millie who was credited with the goal. After that the game was played at a good pace with scoring chances at both ends and minimal penalties, though the Scimitars were the more dominant. They worked hard in retaining possession of the puck and put pressure on Swindon's defence and goalie resulting in another goal at 14.30 from a Stewart shot on goal put in by Roberts. Swindon scored their only goal during a subsequent powerplay shortly after at 15.46 to take the scoreline to 1-2 at the end of the first.

Swindon came out in the second with more purpose and in turn put Sheffield under pressure for the first 10 minutes. They could have taken the lead with good movement of the puck across the goal face but missed the first golden opportunity, then with Raitanen (MOM) making one of his many great saves of the night to prevent what looked another certain goal almost immediately after. Millie deflated the Wildcats further with a shot that flew over the goalie's shoulder at 30.25 to take the score to 3-1. Sheffield managed to successfully kill off another penalty at 33.01 despite Swindon's concerted efforts. Another scoring chance for Sheffield came near the end of the second with an excellent pass from Shudra behind the net and up to Stewart on their blue line to go in on goal alone but the shot went high.

With all three lines being rotated and playing well, the game was still end to end with good play-making in the offensive zone. This paid off for Sheffield's 4th goal at 40.47 when Dowd made no mistake when he received the puck right in front of goal from an accurate pass by Towe from behind the net. A little later Brabon made a good glove save off a Robert's shot after a chase down the ice with Swindon defence on his heels. This good win against a team who had put 9 goals past their previous night's opposition was marred by an accidental high sticking on Dowd on the boards with 22 seconds left on the clock. He was knocked out for a short while but fortunately, after a visit to casualty, was allowed to return to Sheffield.

Scoring Details: Swindon - Juhlin 1+0, Taylor & Hornak 0+1. Sheffield - Millie 2+0, Roberts 1+1, Dowd 1+0, Stewart 0+2, Duncombe, Morgan & Towe 0+1.
