Match Report | 8th January 2007 » Sheffield Scimitars 6-4 Peterborough Phantoms
Face Off: 5.00pm, Saturday 6th January 2007
The Scimitars matched up against Peterborough for their third encounter this season. The Scimitars got off to a shaky start, but improved as the match went on for a spirited ending with some brilliant goals to keep us in 2nd place in the League.
Peterborough, with new coach Doug McEwen in for his first game, delivered a similar blow to Sheffield as the week before in Guildford, with an early powerplay goal, 3.58 minutes into the game. However the Scimitars capitalised towards the end of a 5 on 3 powerplay with an equalising goal scored by Towe (from Dowd) at 14.10, with 7 seconds left on the two-man advantage. With passing and puck possession not quite up to the usual Scimitars' standard, and good interceptions being made by the opposition, their morale was boosted by this goal, only to then lose the momentum due to an injury (from a puck) to Monroe of Peterborough. This required some cleaning of the ice-surface, so the first period break was taken at 16.33. A Scimitars' penalty at 18.36 allowed the Phantoms to re-take the lead with the 1st period then ending on 1-2 to Peterborough. Steve Duncombe also retired from the game early in the first period due to the injury received in Guildford.
The Scimitars' play and possession improved in the 2nd period to equalize again, at 31.49 with a great goal for Towe's 2nd of the night, assisted by Stewart, and Millie who retrieved it as he came out of the penalty box. They took the lead for the first time at 37.05 with a powerplay goal by Morgan, but which actually came off Shudra's knee to go in the net. Peterborough were strong on their powerplay and looked likely to score, but could not put the puck past Raitanen.
In the third, the play was stepped up by both sides, with Peterborough rewarded first with a goal at 42.47, but which was countered immediately by the Scimitars at 43.13 from a superb back-handed shot by Dowd, unassisted, into the top of the net. Yet again Peterborough levelled the score at 4-4, on the powerplay at 46.29. The Scimitars then managed to kill off a 5 on 3 penalty with Morgan and Dowd in the box and the game was looking as though overtime might be needed. However, another superb unassisted backhander from Dowd (MOM), after stealing the puck from behind Rockman's net, at 57.38 causing Peterborough to lift their goalie and allowing Towe to get his hat-trick with an empty-netter at 59.33 to seal the victory.
Game Summary: Sheffield: Towe 3+0, Dowd 2+2, Shudra 1+1, Morgan, Stewart, Roberts & Millie 0+1. Raitanen 28/4 Peterborough: Foremsky 1+3, Hutchinson & Gough 1+1, Buckman 1+0, Kohvakka 0+1. Rockman 27/5 ENG 1/1 MOM Gough.
