Match Report | 18th January 2007 » Milton Keynes 2-0 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 7.30pm, Thursday 11th January 2007
A fast-paced 1st leg of the semi-final at Milton Keynes sees the Lightning bringing to Sheffield a 2-0 lead to set up an exciting conclusion in the 2nd leg at iceSheffield on Wednesday 24th January, face-off at 7.30pm.
Unfortunately the Scimitars could not replicate the 3-0 away win they enjoyed at the beginning of November, and found the slightly revamped Lightning continuing their recent good form of 11 wins out of the last 13 games. In an end-to-end game, Milton Keynes continually pushed the Scimitars, who seemed a little off their usual pace tonight, though in the first two periods there was plenty of offensive play by both teams. Both goalies saw plenty of action with Hollyhead facing 33 shots and Pasi Raitanen 41 shots for a 0-0 first period and a 1-0 second. Milton Keynes broke the deadlock with a powerplay goal at 32.33 by Poole, which the Scimitars could not level despite changing goalies briefly to allow the full complement of imports on the ice during a 5-on-3 powerplay.
Milton Keynes picked up an early goal in the third, from a deflected shot at 40.57 and could have gone 3-0 up on a penalty shot, but Raitanen made a great save to keep the score at 2. Although the Scimitars tried hard to break Hollyhead's shutout, and with Dowd picking up his 2nd consecutive MOM award, it was not to be their night and they will have to break through Milton Keynes defence on the 24th January to claim some early goals, as reflected in the shot count of 7 on Milton Keynes and 18 on Raitanen in the third period. Milton Keynes' fans are already anticipating getting to the final, the Scimitars will be equally determined to disappoint them and will hope there is plenty of support to help them win on the night.
Scoring Details: Milton Keynes: Morgan & Poole 1+0, Kieras 0+2, Newman & Dora 0+1 MOM - Hollyhead Sheffield: MOM Dowd
