Match Report | 4th January 2007 » Guildford Flames 3-1 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Saturday 30th December 2006
The Scimitars travelled to Guildford for their third successive meeting against them over the Christmas period, but came away empty-handed as Sheffield struggled to claim any points, like most teams, on Guildford ice. Despite it being Guildford's third game since Christmas, they looked more game ready and were out to avenge their loss to Sheffield before Christmas. They also played a more physical game, which cost the Scimitars a player early on, with Steve Duncombe being unable to take any further part after he was taken into the boards five minutes into the game. With Stewart returning to action, Scimitars were just missing Turner, while Guildford had their second top points scorer, Kohut, back in the line-up.
Scimitars lost the initiative in the first period after quick strikes by Potts and Zavoral within the first two minutes. Guildford always looked threatening in the Scimitars' zone but Raitanen blocked any further attempts, especially during penalty-killing, but Sheffield could not capitalise on their powerplay opportunities despite some good chances.
The second period was a little more evenly balanced with the Scimitars able to dominate play for longer spells, but could not finish apart from the one goal which came at 34.30, scored by Dowd after some nice passing up the ice from Stewart and Towe. The lines were rotated more, and with Mike Holland, having replaced the injured Steve Duncombe, alongside the always hard-working Ron Shudra (MOM). After Shudra had been elbowed by Zavoral, they exchanged some words before Zavoral was put in the penalty box and the Scimitars looked much more threatening in this period.
The final twenty minutes really saw the Scimitars stepping up the pressure in their offensive zone, especially during power-plays, making Annetts (MOM) work hard to keep Sheffield from equalising, but they were unable to get the puck past him. In the end Guildford were able to extend their lead on their power-play to take the score to 3-1.
Scoring Details: Guildford - Zavoral 1+2, Potts & Melicherik 1+0, Dixon 0+1. MOM - Annetts Sheffield: Dowd 1+0, Stewart & Towe 0+1. MOM - Shudra. Referee: M. Thompson.
