Match Report | 14th December 2006 » Sheffield Scimitars 12-2 Wightlink Raiders

Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 9th December 2006

Sheffield came storming out of the blocks for the Saturday game, especially good as they were missing three U 20's GB players playing in Turin - Ben Morgan, Matt Towe and Robert Dowd, and Andrew Turner through injury, though with two players returning to the ice from injury, Stuart Brittle, and Paul Jones, plus Coach Neil Abel came off the bench to boost numbers.

As a period scoreline of 5-0, 5-2, 2-0, and total penalty minutes of 4 for the Scimitars and 2 for the Raiders suggests, the game was free-flowing. The first goal came at 0.11 seconds and rather set the scene for the rest of the game, with the Scimitars fluid and accurate passing, especially in front of goal. Millie scored from a good pass by Brittle, followed at 4.39 by a goal by Butterworth who deflected a hard blueline shot from Abel, assisted Stewart. This was quickly followed by another goal at 5.09 by Ashton from O.Barron, and another at 8.16 by Roberts who made no mistake from a rebound . There was a little respite for the beleaguered goalie who had only just returned to action following a nasty concussion, (and with no back-up) who made some excellent saves in between the goals. Final goal of the period came at 13.51 from Brittle, (just returned from an injury) who tapped in the puck lying near the goal line from a part-save shot Goodman from Butterworth.

The 2nd period went much the same way with 5 goals coming from Butterworth, (Stewart & Duncombe at 24.33), Abel (from Butterworth & Stewart at 25.23), Millie (MOM) (from Roberts and Brittle at 26.57), Brittle, (from Millie and Roberts at 32.56) and Millie again at 37.12 from Brittle). The only penalty of the period at 28.02 was for Coles charging Stewart into net. with the Scimitars rolling three lines and 4 junior players, and looking a slick unit with the period ending 10-2.

The Scimitars changed netminders for the 3rd period, giving Pasi a well-earned break, for Jones who was coming back from an injury. Just two goals in this period from Butterworth (Woolhouse and Stewart) and Roberts (from Millie) and with the Scimitars picking up 2 delay of the game penalties resulting in a 5 on 3 powerplay for Wightlink, but to no avail and the game ended a decisive 12-2 win. An excellent game by the Scimitars, and the crowd were not only entertained by the goal-fest but also by Louise Ward, who performed a dance routine in the first period break, to much applause.

Scoring Details: Millie 3+3, Butterworth 3+2, Brittle 2+4, Roberts 2+2, Abel 1+1, Ashton 1+0, Stewart 0+4, Duncombe, Woolhouse, Goodman & Barron 0+1. MOM Millie.
