Match Report | 19th December 2006 » Guildford Flames 3-2 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 17th December 2006
Again the Scimitars were without key players - import Steve Roberts, and GB U20s, Robert Dowd, Ben Morgan and Matt Towe, (winning a Bronze medal in Turin), and also Andrew Turner missing with an injury, but they played with grit and determination.
The Scimitars faced Guildford on Sunday after a hard game on Saturday, and the team came out fighting from the start. They took an early lead from a deflected shot by Millie off a rocket from Ron at 2.14. Guildford pressed hard after that goal and claimed their equaliser at 8.45 when the Scimitars struggled to clear their goal area for several minutes and Pasi made many excellent saves during the Scimitars only penalty kill as well as the rest of the game, facing 40 shots in total.
Guildford went ahead at 24.07 after Potts intercepted the puck during Scimitars' passing play in their offensive zone, and beat the defence down the ice to score. Guildford's first penalty came as a double at 31.10, giving the Scimitars a 5 on 3 powerplay for 2 minutes and a chance to equalise, which Shudra did, combined with Millie and Stewart at 32.44. The second period ended with the score at 2-2 despite end to end action.
Both netminders were called on at the start of the 3rd period, and Stewart was about to test Watkins again before he was hauled down in front of goal by chasing d-men. A penalty ensued but Guildford's penalty-killing unit cleared their zone each time the Scimitars' tried to set up their powerplay. As soon as play returned to 5-on-5 at 47.04, Melicherik managed to take the puck round a sprawling Pasi, who had blocked him on one side, to score the game-winning goal at 47.16 on the other side. The Scimitars fought hard to equalise, against an equally determined Guildford, who did not want the game to go to overtime twice in a weekend. Brittle, (MOM) was fast skating all night, along with the others who put Guildford under pressure all game, with Shudra continually disrupting Guildford's puck possession.
Another free-flowing game end to end game with minimal penalties and it will be an interesting return match when both sides have players returning to the ice, though Sheffield will still be under-strength.
