Match Report | 5th November 2006 » Sheffield Scimitars 5-1 Swindon Wildcats

Face Off: 5.15pm, Sunday 5th November 2006

Another excellent 4 point weekend against the odds and with an ever-shortening bench. A lower tempo game on Sunday against Swindon though the fireworks kicked off on ice at 58.46 before the big public display outside the rink at the end of the game.

Despite an increasing injury list the Scimitars still managed to outsmart Swindon, who had beaten Romford the previous night by 11 goals to 6 in a game with a high penalty count following a bench clearance. The Scimitars were missing Nat Rose and Lloyd Gibson (both injured in Milton Keynes), Stuart Brittle, Carl Ashton and Paul Jones, though Les Millie returned to the action after a brief one-match lay-off and Neil Abel dusted off his skates to fill in the gap in the roster for his first match action of the season.

It was a fairly even 0-0 first period, with neither team managing to hit the back of the net though both sides had their chances. Dowd had a seemingly clear chance on goal after picking up the puck on returning to the ice from the penalty box but was hauled down before he could release a shot. Pasi then made a fine glove save off an ensuing shorthanded breakaway denying Swindon a near certain goal. This was followed by several good shots at goal by Shudra, Stewart and Millie before the scoreless first period ended.

The Scimitars finally scored on a 5-on-3 power-play unassisted by Towe from a rebound three minutes into the second period.. This was followed 36 seconds later by a 5-on-4 power-play goal by Duncombe from Dowd and Towe at 23.39. The same line scored again at 26.45, this time an even-handed tipped-in goal by Dowd from Shudra. The second period flurry of goals concluded with another power-play goal from Millie assisted by Shudra and Stewart at 33.19.

One goal each were traded in the third, with Swindon pulling one back at 40.50 but MOM Matt Towe claimed his second of the night, assisted by Morgan and Woolhouse after some good work in front of the net. The third period was fairly quiet until a couple of fights erupted at 58.46 with Ryan Johnson dropping the gloves first with Hornak and then with Hargreaves, downing them both on the ice with some ease with some punches thrown in as well. The 5-1 win gave the Scimitars 12 wins out of 13 League games, which has to be an incredible start to the season.
