Match Report | 20th November 2006 » Sheffield Scimitars 3-3 Peterborough Phantoms
Face Off: 7.15pm, Saturday 18th November 2006

The Scimitars played superbly in the 1st period, but it was a point lost rather than a point gained in the tying 3rd period, resulting in a scoreless but nail-biting overtime period.
The Scimitars faced 5th placed Peterborough for the first time at iceSheffield this season, having beaten them 4-1 recently away. Still missing forwards Dowd, Brittle and Rose (and n/m Jones), ex-Newcastle Vipers Matt Beveridge plus several junior players were drafted in to bolster the line-up.
The first period showed the Scimitars at their best, playing with energy and skill and dominating play with a 3 goal haul. Sheffield had just successfully killed off a penalty 9 seconds into the game when Ron Shudra backhanded a shot from the blueline which was tipped in expertly by Les Millie at 2.45. The powerplay unit had been driving the net hard during a 5 on 3 powerplay, with the second goal coming at 5.56 (4 on 4) and was scored by Matt Towe, from some good passing by Beveridge and Holland. The pressure continued on Rockman in the Peterborough net with Simon Butterworth one-timing a pass from behind the net by Millie at 10.46 for the third goal. The Scimitars ended the period looking in confident control of the game.
Neil Abel gave ice-time to all the players on the team, including six junior players who acquitted themselves well. The momentum of the game though was beginning to shift in the second period but despite increasing their shots on goal, Peterborough still could not breach Pasi Raitanen's defence as the Scimitars had to kill off ten minutes of penalties in this period to Phantoms two minutes.
A series of penalties were evenly taken by both teams in the third period though Peterborough were increasingly dominant offensively and Rockman continued to block the good scoring chances the Scimitars had. The game came alive after Peterborough scored their first goal at 48.01 on the powerplay, and they seemed a revitalised team. Another powerplay goal at 56.43 and a third at 57.45 completed a big fight back for the visitors.
Overtime saw both teams attacking hard as penalties were traded and Pasi had 3 great saves to prevent Peterborough taking the 2 points. This was another game where the Scimitars were tiring after having played 4 games in six days, (having also played GB U20's on Tuesday night), so with only one game this weekend it will give the players a much needed extra day to recover.
Next weekend they travel to Telford on Saturday and take on Milton Keynes on Sunday, at the earlier face off time of 4.15pm to accommodate the fact that the Steelers are playing Nottingham at 6pm.
