In the first challenge game between the two teams this season and with both sides missing key players with injuries, plus important league games at the weekend, this was never going to be a full tilt game. Having said that though, the Scimitars wanted to play hard to see how they fared against a more talented team, and the Steelers obviously had to make sure they won.

The game set off at a good pace, with end to end hockey and both netminders making some excellent saves to keep the score at 0-0 at end of first period. The play and shots on goal were fairly equal in the first two periods though the Steelers took the lead at 28.36 scored by Sutter, from Philips and Clouthier, and helped by a man in the crease, which was the only way the Steelers were going to score on Pasi Raitanen. This goal was also scored after the only penalty called by Andy Carson all night, sending Sutter to the box for hooking. The second goal for the Steelers was at 39.51 scored by Tessier, from Clouthier and further assisted by Davie Lawrence after the Scimitars had changed their netminders to Dmitri Zimozdra.

The Steelers were missing Maltby, Ricci and Darby, with the Scimitars, (still playing with only 3 non-British-trained players), drafting in O. Barron and L. Haywood from the ENL team for their Scimitars debut to cover for injuries to Millie, Brittle, Ashton, Rose, Gibson as well as n/m Jones, Johnson out and with Neil Abel also being away.

Two further goals in the third period at 43.21, Sutter from Thompson, and at 48.08 by Hewitt, from Thomas & Johnson, fully sealed the Scimitars' fate, combined with losing one of their fast, on-form forwards and two-way contract player, Rob Dowd who collided with a goal post after driving the net. This will be a huge loss for them if he is out for any games.

The Scimitars played three line hockey throughout, giving their young players plenty of ice-time. Ron Shudra said the team played very well and was pleased with everybody's contribution against an obviously much more talented team. He said he thought the Scims had some good chances but they were unable to find a way passed Dave Lawrence in the Steelers' net, who gained a well-deserved man-of-the-match for his shut-out. Mark Stewart was picked as the Scimitars' MOM.

The U10s entertained the crowd by giving a great exhibition of the future local talent with a scrimmage during the first period break. They currently sit at the top of their league with 5 wins out of 6 games, 52 goals for to 15 against.

There was also a bucket collection at the end of the match for Help a Hallam Child. The Scimitars next home game is Sunday, face-off at 7.15pm and away at Bracknell on the Sunday.
