Match Report | 15th October 2006 » Wightlink Raiders 5-9 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.30pm, Sunday 15th October 2006
On Sunday the penalty-taking roles were reversed with most of the more serious infractions being called. This allowed the Scimitars to demonstrate their superior skills and the Raiders venting their frustration, despite their short-lived euphoria at scoring at 12 seconds into the game. Les Millie (MOM) scored the first of his 4 goal scoring spree at 4.08, assisted by Morgan and Towe. Hat-trick goal scorer, Robert Dowd claimed his first at 11.12 (PP), assisted Morgan, with Millie getting his second at 16.46 from Stewart and Butterworth for a 3-1 first period. The Scimitars could have been well ahead by the end of the first with repeated blasts on the Raiders' goalie who made many exceptional saves.
The game flowed much more in the second period, though with the Raiders scoring either side of a marker by Towe, who was well set up by Shudra just after hard-working D-man, James Goodman was assisted in colliding with an up-ended goal net. He sustained a possible broken nose causing some disruption to the Scimitars rhythm and lines for the rest of that period.
After re-grouping for the 3rd, the Scimitars scored 5 goals in a rapid-fire 12 minute spell which left the IOW goalie shell-shocked. Dowd bagged two at 43.58 & 44.45, assisted by Morgan and Towe, before he took on Pinnington at 48.02 resulting in both going for an early shower. Another loss to the Scimitars line-up did not deter them with two Millie blasts at 44.45 & 48.59, from Butterworth and Stewart respectively, and with Butterworth, from Stewart and Morgan, wrapping up the Scims scoring at 56.21, though the Raiders did manage to pull back two late goals. A 5-9 win to the Scimitars, who put 71 shots on the opposition net, concluded a well deserved 4 point weekend.
