Match Report | 30th October 2006 » Bracknell Bees 3-4 Sheffield Scimtars
Face Off: 6.00pm, Sunday 29th October 2006
In a rare one game weekend, the Scimitars had a great win in an end to end game with a tight finish in a top of the table clash. This extends their winning tally to ten out of eleven League games played and four wins out of four in the Cup games.
The Scimitars were missing Stuart Brittle and still one non British-trained player down while Bracknell were missing Rushton and Bicknell.
Sheffield took a very early lead at 0.15 seconds with a wrap-around goal on Nathan Craze scored by Mark Stewart, assisted by Millie and Shudra, which rather quietened the Bracknell supporters. The Scimitars then managed to kill 6 minutes of penalties before Bracknell equalised through Smital's shorthanded goal at 7.51.
Although the teams looked fairly evenly balanced at this stage, the Scimitars capitalised on a 5 on 3 advantage scoring a well-worked goal at 8.46 by Butterworth, from Shudra and Morgan to regain the lead. This was further extended at 10.13 again on the powerplay by Dowd, from Towe and Woolhouse. Although Bracknell were able to keep control of the puck and looked fairly strong on the powerplay, they only managed to convert it once, and the Scimitars ended the first period 3-1 up.
Sheffield controlled the play in the second period though scoring just one goal at 20.27 after some smooth passing coming into the zone, with Butterworth claiming his second of the night, assisted by Millie and Stewart to take the lead of 4-1 at the end of the second.
The balance of the game seemed to shift in the third period towards Bracknell, either because the Scimitars slackened off a little or the Bees tightened up and intensified their game. They scored at 44.30 to close the gap a little and then took advantage of the six minutes of penalties given to Sheffield in the closing 10 minutes of the game to take the score to 4-3 with three minutes to go. Pasi Raitanen stood firm facing 16 shots in that period to Craze facing 2 shots. Sheffield held onto their lead in an exciting end to end finish to the game to take them three points clear at the top of the table, winning by 4 goals to 3.
