Match Report | 10th September 2006 » Solihull Barons 3-8 Sheffield Scimitars
Face Off: 5.00pm, Sunday 10th September 2006
Sunday's EPL Cup fixture Solihull began ominously for Sheffield as Solihull took a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of a penalty-packed first period. Fifty-six minutes of penalties were dished out in twenty minutes, 26 on Solihull and 30 for Sheffield, with barely any 5 on 5 hockey being played. Frustration was very evident from both the players and an increasingly vocal crowd.
Solihull initially looked the stronger side and dangerous around our goal during several 5 on 3 powerplays, but despite ex-Scimitar Sobala scoring at 11.57, Pasi Raitanen made some fine saves to keep the Scimitars in the game. MOM Matt Towe scored at 16.29 from an excellent pass by Ron Shudra to end the 1st period at 1-2 down.
The players must have learnt what the new rules meant by the start of the second period, with only 16 penalty minutes. Sheffield stepped up the pressure with Millie equalising on the PP at 20.50, Stewart scoring top shelf from a pass by Towe, at 24.37 (PP), and Millie claiming his second of the night SH at 30.31. The period ended 3-4 to Solihull after their SH goal at 35.11.
The Scimitars doubled their goal tally in the third period with a another rocket from Shudra at 42.06, Kyle Schutte claiming his first 2 goals at 44.31 and 57.21 from passes by Stewart, with a backhander by Brittle in between, for an 8-3 win.
